I’m back from my temporary break that wasn’t even planned! We were in the Scottisch Lowlands last week and although there was wifi in our accommocation, it was terribly slow and it didn’t let me upload photos onto my website. I think the castle walls were simply too thick! Of course I filmed our apartment and will upload a vlog on my YouTube channel very soon.

We had tons of plans for this 5 day trip. One of them was a stopover in the Yorkshire Dales before continuing with our journey to Lauder in Scotland. I’m sure many of you remember some of the scenes in Downton Abbey when Anna says that she will be driving to Ripon with Lady Mary? Downton Abbey is set in Yorkshire whereas Highclere Castle is in Hampshire of course. So far we haven’t really explored Yorkshire but as it’s only about a 2 hour drive for us, we are more than happy to do it now. Pinterest is my source for ideas which is why I saved Fountains Abbey there and also because it reminded me how long we’ve been wanting to go there.

Fountains Abbey lies along the valley of the River Skell near Ripon in the Yorkshire Dales. Founded in 1132, the Cistercian Monastery operated until the 16th century when Henry VIII ordered the Dissolution of the Monasteries.

The ruins are very impressive and you can see how huge it must have been. It doesn’t come as a surprise that the abbey was one of the largest and most influential ones in Britain. The only downside: We didn’t have enough time! Traffic was quite heavy and we arrived later than expected. The owners of the apartment asked us to be there at a certain time so we had to make compromises. The huge estate also comprises the stunning Studley Royal Water Garden as well. As we were so taken by it all, we will gladly return. Do I say that every time? I know! There’s a lot to see in the Yorkshire Dales, so I have a link for you here.

Happy planning and have a great start into the new week!

Vielen Dank liebe Joanna. Ja, es ist wunderschön dort, war so traurig, dass wir nicht so viel Zeit hatten.

Hi Kirsten
I think I have been to these ruins when I visited the Dales some years ago. I will have to hunt out my photos. I love the Dales and you will definitely need to go there again – you will enjoy doing some hiking there. You look good in that hat!

Hi Ruth, Thank you! I can imagine that you loved it there. Most definitely, I began to feel a longing for the Yorkshire Dales in my childhood. Remember ‘All Creates Great and Small’?x
