SHATTERED AFTERNOON TEA DATE

Strange title? I know! A shattered date and a romantic afternoon tea in a castle just won’t go together, will it? And this is what happened. Last week I booked a table for Saturday afternoon for afternoon tea at Ruthin Castle. I had a friendly exchange of emails with an employee and finally the confirmation in my hands. Afternoon tea for 2, one of them glutenfree, served at the window in the library. Perfect. We really looked forward to it and it all seemed fine when we went to the reception desk. We went to the library, sat down and waited. When nobody came we asked an employee who told us that he was on his first shift and needed to ask another colleague. More time passed and another employee appeared asking whether we wanted tea or coffee. Some more time passed, the library started to fill with wedding guests now and another guy appeared to tell us that they can’t serve walk-ins today because they are having a wedding reception! Right, walk-ins? We had it all booked in advance. To be honest we were so fed up with the whole situation that we left. I doubt that we will be back.

Ruthin is such a pretty village in the middle of the Welsh mountains. Our visit wasn’t in vain after all. We arranged a viewing for a big flat in an old house right next to the castle for the very same day. The flat was one huge disappointment. We always study the floorplans in depth and check out the location with Google Earth. This one looked quite promising. Before we had a house built in Germany years ago, we also considered buying an old property. Believe me, we came across lots of stuff. The atmosphere of this flat though can’t even be described. It was simply terrible. So completely different than in the photos and we couldn’t even have imagined what would expect us. When the agent opened the front door, I got this strange feeling it would be a nightmare. It is best to just forget about it.

On the bright side, we discovered Ruthin for us and could see us living there. You have all the important shops in the village and the beautiful nature lies right at your feet. You only have to open the door and start walking. I said to Joerg that it reminds me a lot of the Allgäu in Germany though of course the Welsh mountains aren’t as high. We loved it there. In fact so much that we went back the next day.

What a shame about the afternoon tea! I haven’t been to Ruthin Castles for years but remember having a really nice lunch there. Ruthin itself, is really nice. I get my haircut in the nicest hairdressers there. In fact, the whole area is quite beautiful. If we didn’t have to live so close to a main road (my husband works in Manchester) I think we’d move that way too x

Yes, it was such a shame and I was fuming when we were there lol. The area is lovely, isn’t it? So glad you agree.xx

Aw nothing worse! That happened to us before and they forgot about an allergy – not good! But look at the pretty place you found instead? PLUS loving you in green and you know I have a current weakness for checks 😉 xx

How disappointing for your Kirsten. You look lovely in that beautiful green dress. Love the flowers. How could a place with such a wonderful name let you down? LOL Ruth

Ughhh, Kirsten….what a pain! My husband and I absolutely love afternoon tea, so I can imagine the disappointment!
The flat reminds me of a place when we were moving last year. The photos looked so great, but the smell was incredibly horrid! Something you can’t see on the photos, I guess! The interesting thing is the place we ended up buying only had 2 photos on the website and I was worried it would be terrible—needless to say, we loved it!!
Lots of luck

Yes, it was terrible, we really looked forward to the afternoon tea.

OMG yes, I totally know what you mean. Some photos look so good and then when you go to a viewing, you just think ‘What the hell’ and then you can experience quite the opposite as well as you so correctly stated. You give me hope. Thank you Jodie.x
