Some of you might think how in the world could Wales and Italy have anything in common? Thinking of Wales dramatic landscapes, myths and castles are the first things that spring to mind. I’m telling you, you will be surprised if you decide to visit Portmeirion.

Portmeirion (the name sounds a bit like Portofino, doesn’t it?) is a fantasy place, built by the eccentric Bertram Clough Williams-Ellis. It’s a nostalgic island for people who appreciate the sense of beauty.

This is what you find here. Colourful houses that make you smile all the time and which look as if you’re right in the middle of an Italian fishing village. It might only be a fantasy but it’s a great one. There are 45 buildings, some cafés and restaurants and then there’s The Portmeirion Hotel. It always gets such great reviews. With the Welsh mountains and the Irish Sea surrounding the peninsula, the scenery couldn’t be more beautiful.

We first came across Portmeirion when we watched the series ‘Cold Feet’, back then our favourite series on TV. We decided that we had to see this place ourselves. This time round, the weather was a bit dull but we didn’t really notice with all the pastel coloured houses and the colourful hydrangeas. If you visit, don’t forget to take a longer walk along the peninsula, just leave the village behind you and keep walking along the bay. There are hardly any people there but it’s so worth it. little italy in wales

Portmeirion was also location for the series ‘The Prisoner’ which was a huge success in the 60s and even achieved a cult status. I’ve never watched it but of course it gets mentioned on your visit. Those who love fantasy, indulge in their dreams and don’t take it all too seriously, will love this place. little italy in wales
