HIGHLAND FEELING IN SNOWDONIA

Mountains have always held a special fascination over me. I was lucky to have given the opportunity to fly to Tyrol for the very first time at the age of 12. Back then our local newspaper held a competition and parents were asked questions. This went on for weeks. I did never expect to find myself on board of an airplane to Innsbruck later that summer together with another 48 children. Flying was still something very special in the 80s and if one or two of your classmates went on holiday by plane, it was unusual. This was the first time I travelled by myself and I was extremely homesick. Luckily it got easier after a few days. And then we drove to the Ötztal Alps to do some hiking. The beautiful nature distracted me. I’ve always loved hiking and walking up a mountain has always been very special to me. To this day. We lived in Bavaria for quite some time and whenever we came home at night after work, it felt like we were going on holiday. There was this incredible view towards the mountains. Amazing.

A while ago I published a post whose photos were taken in Capel Curig in Snowdonia (here). We were by the lake Llynnau Mymbyr, it was freezing cold but very beautiful. Since we had 14 degrees Celsius last Sunday, we took one of our old hiking guides. We bought it for our first holiday in Wales! In it you find a short walk, just about 4 1/2 miles long. We chose it because we planned on taking many photos so we needed more time. I actually fell twice which never happened before. Some stones were very slippery and I probably didn’t pay enough attention. I’m wearing hiking boots and I would everyone advise to do the same as they guarantee you a good grip and hold. Given clear conditions, you can even see Snowdon during the walk. Unfortunately we weren’t that lucky. Shortly before the end of the walk, we took a break and were surprised that this was possible in February. We didn’t even freeze, ate our sandwiches and drank tea. And were surrounded by sheep who gave us curious looks.

It’s a simple and short walk with beautiful views towards this breathtaking and at times very dramatic scenery. Pure pleasure indeed.

Thanks so much Jodie. Neven been to Denver but from what I see it’s great there. Of course very different from here but if you drive out of the city, don’t you have great scenery too?

There isn’t? Where in the UK do you live? I often thought there are no places to hike where we used to live but there actually were. Thanks so much.
